Exploring Ways to Get Involved on Campus and Forming a Community

The Triathlon Team

Many students may wonder when coming to college what they are supposed to do with all of their free time. It is common for students to search for a community where they can build lifelong friendships with others who share their common interests. To find a small community within a big school, students engage in activities on campus, clubs, intramurals, or sports.

A great opportunity for students who enjoy the physical activities of running, biking, or swimming is the Triathlon Team! It is the largest club sport on Cal Poly’s campus. The Triathlon Team welcomes any level of athlete. If you are experienced at running, biking, or swimming or if you just want to compete in your first triathlon, then this is the right place for you!

Maryn Tudor, triathlon team member, explains that the triathlon team has been a great way for her to get involved in a club sport at Cal Poly. She joined the team because she loves running and wanted to form a community.“Everyone is really close on the team. Most people spend their free time doing this,” Tudor states. She reveals that the team has a lot of traditions and bonding activities they do together. “It is just like a fraternity or sorority. The team works out together, goes out to eat together, and spends most of their time with each other,” Tudor says. She met some of her best friends on the triathlon team and is excited to continue to train for next season!

The Cal Poly Triathlon Team is one of the best teams in the nation. They compete against elite schools in the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference. This year their female team ranked second out of ten teams and their male and combined team ranked third overall. The Mustangs are a competitive team and hold a reputation of being a hard team to beat. This year they beat some of the top ranked universities such as UCLA, USC, UCSB, and Stanford.

According to the Triathlon Team’s website, their mission is “to make the sport of triathlon accessible and affordable for all collegiate athletes, while promoting a competitive and fun atmosphere to help members achieve their athletic goals.”

The Triathlon Team practices daily with bike practice three time a week, swim practice three times a week, and run practice three times a week. All of the practices are not required but they are highly encouraged so that individuals can work on their skills while also building relationships with their peers and coaches.
