Fitness is fun!

Updated: May 16, 2019

Not only is it important to eat healthy in college but it is also important to stay active and maintain your physical health!

There are many ways in which college students at Cal Poly are able to stay fit throughout their time in San Luis Obispo. One of the greatest resources available to students is the Cal Poly Recreation Center. With over 20,000 square feet of exercise space, students can work out on the training equipment or run around the indoor track.

The Rec Center includes a variety of facilities such as indoor basketball courts, racquetball courts, a martial-arts room, outdoor sand volleyball, and a climbing park. Even if you are looking for a chill day to relax and read a book, you can find many Cal Poly students sitting alongside the 20 lap lane pool. One of the best features lies just outside of the rec center: Shake Smart. Many students purchase smoothies or açaí bowls to fuel up after their workouts. Jordan Peterkofsky, first year student, states that the “Rec Center has been a great way for [her] to stay in shape.” She “goes at least three times a week.” She has a routine of starting on the elliptical, going on the treadmill, using the leg press machine, and then ending with an ab workout. After she finishes her workout, she goes down to Shake Smart and orders a “perfect 10 shake.”

Another way Cal Poly students stay fit is through hiking. San Luis Obispo has many hikes and trails that are located right behind the freshman dorms and on campus apartments. Some of the most popular hikes are Architecture Graveyard, the “P,” and Serenity Swing. Many students go on hikes not only to get their steps in but also to relax and unwind from their busy week of classes. Cal Poly Freshman Kiana Meagher explains that “hiking is one of [her] favorite activities.” She loves the outdoors and finds hiking to be the perfect way to “alleviate stress and feel more connected to nature.”
