The Hydro Flask Trend Continues to Grow on Campus

Have you ever walked around campus and spotted the brightly colored water bottles in the sides of many students’ backpacks that are decorated with stickers? These trendy water bottles also known as Hydro Flasks have been rising in popularity among teens and college students for about a decade now.

The Hydro Flask company was founded in Bend, Oregon by Travis Rosbach and Cindy Morse in 2009. These insulated steel bottles will keep ice water cold for up to 24 hours as well as keep warm water hot for up to six hours. The reason these water bottles are able to keep water at a desired temperature is because of the double wall vacuum insulated technology in each product known as TempShield. So what is so special about a Hydro Flask and why should you purchase one over the other popular brand of water bottles: S’well?

The hydro flask is versatile as it comes in seven sizes, ranging from 12 to 64 ounces, as well as two lid types, and 14 colors. Sarah Upp, a first year biology major at Cal Poly SLO, has owned both a S’well and a Hydro Flask. She believes: “Hydro flasks are a great investment for two reasons. First is the ability to choose the lid you want (straw or flex cap) and second is the various options of the size of the lid.” She explains that the small size of the opening on a S’well makes it difficult to fit ice cubes in the bottle while Hydro Flasks have wide mouth cap options. After owning a Hydro Flask, she says that she will never go back to a S’well.

In addition, the Hydro Flask is eco-friendly, BPA Free, easy to clean and a recyclable water bottle. Hydro Flasks can save money in the long run as purchasing a plastic water bottle every time can be costly and harmful to the environment. Plastic also carries the chemical, Bisphenol A (BPA) which has been linked to health problems causing an imbalance in hormones, heart disease, and problems in the brain.
